How to phrase a question for a Tarot or Oracle card reading.

Updated: Jan 24

Have you ever have a Tarot or Oracle card reading and left feeling more confused or possibly pacified by what you have been told. Or have you done a reading for yourself, and the answer is rather ambiguous, so you try again and keep being led in circles, like a dog that chases it’s tail.

I hate to tell you this, but the problem isn’t with the reader or the cards, the problem is you!!! Yes you, you aren’t taking the time to think about the question and phrasing it properly. Think of it this way, if you need to get somewhere and give Google maps directions that sound like, it’s a grey house on top of a hill over there somewhere, who knows where google maps will take you, probably off the edge of a cliff.

So, you need to consider your question, write it out and think about it, ask yourself:

Is this question going to give me the answer I want or need?

Is this question going to help me make a decision?

Is this question going to lead to me asking follow up questions, and what might they be, so I need to create questions for a 2 or 3 part reading to see the path ahead?

I’ll give you an example of a bad but common love reading question. “Is (Ben) the right guy for me?” The cards come through all positive and say yes Ben is the right guy for you and you leave the reading feeling like you have met the man of your dreams and go along blissfully for a while. But sometime later you notice Ben isn’t the person you thought he was, he may be narcissistic, he may cheat on you, he may physically hurt you. Ben may be the “right” guy to break your heart to crack you open and bring your world tumbling in around you. You see universe is literal, it does not know the subtleties of what we are asking, it just knows the words, so it answers the words of the questions that is all. A better way to phrase that question would be “Is Ben the person who will make me happy and care for me unconditionally?” Or “Will Ben and I be happy together?” It is important that I do mention that Ben does have freewill and Ben may or may not choose to stay in the relationship in the future but at least with this question you know that your time with Ben will be happy and fulfilling.

Another example of an unhelpful question would be “Is my business going to be successful?” I’m guilty of this one. A better question would be.

“What action(s) can I take to help my business succeed?”

Now you might think that is a little ambiguous too, as the tarot or oracle cards won’t tell you specific actions, but they will, as most individual tarot or oracle cards are related to either people, actions, challenges etc. However, You may find it helpful to ask additional questions that are specific to your business type: e.g; I might want to know if I should launch a new product line in Summer or Autumn. So, I will ask “Should I launch my new product this Summer or Autumn?” Then when I draw the tarot or oracle cards, I will look for the meaning of the card, but the meaning may not be that clear, so I will look at the symbology on the card, do the colours remind me of Summer or Autumn? What is the number of the card? How many months away is that or does it relate to a month that is in Summer or Autumn? If these things all match up, I have my answer.

As you can see, a good question can make all the difference between a lack-lustre tarot or oracle card reading and a reading that adds value and sets you on the right path.
